President’s Corner
Puppies, puppies, puppies. Who can resist the adorable face of a cute little puppy? They make us smile and laugh and feel good. But what happens when that cute little puppy starts to grow and becomes more curious and energetic? This is a natural stage in a dog’s growth process. Just as teenagers act out, so do our pets as they hit their teenage years. A family can work through this stage by showing love, compassion and attention. By training your pet and setting realistic boundaries through positive reinforcement. High energy puppies grow into high energy dogs who can find themselves stuck in a backyard and forgotten. The amount of love and attention decreases during this time of high energy, yet the love and attention should stay consistent to help the pet through this challenging time. The lack of attention causes the dog to act out by barking, digging, chewing, etc… Hey, negative attention is better than nothing. When choosing a companion dog for your family, take a close look at your family, choose a breed/mix that can fit your expectations, do not expect the dog to change drastically to meet yours. Many wonderful dogs are abandoned at shelters each year because a family expects too much and gives too little time and love. Be a part of the solution and not the problem. Love and cherish your pets.
Happy Tails to You,
